Avon Grove (PA) rising sophomore midfielder Beau Kush has made a verbal commitment to play Division I lacrosse at the University of North Carolina.

Beau Kush ledger:

Beau Kush

Beau Kush

High School: Avon Grove High School, West Grove, PA (southwest of Philadelphia)

Graduation Year: Class of 2016

Position: Midfield

College Choice: University of North Carolina

Club Affiliation: Mesa Fresh 2015

Major lacrosse honors: Member of District 1 Champions 2013, Ches-Mont Co-Champions 2013, 1st Team All-Ches-Mont Midfielder 2013, Jake Reed Nike Blue Chip Rising Sophomore 2013, Dick’s Sporting Goods National Champions (MESA) 2012, Rider MVP Champions (MESA) 2012, Keystone State Champions (CCLA) 2012, Jake Reed Nike Blue Chip rising freshman 2012, 2X CCLA U-15 All-Star.

Academic honors: 3.6 GPA, Honors

What will you major in/study? Science or Business (undecided)

Why did you choose the school? “After meeting with the coaches at the schools we visited last winter, I knew that UNC had the ‘sense of family’ I was looking for in a university as well as a top notch lacrosse program, I really bought into the whole experience. The campus and facilities are incredible and with a great coaching staff aboard I believe that UNC has the capability of winning a national championship. The warm weather definitely does not hurt, and knowing UNC academically is one of the most respected universities in the country is a huge plus.”

What is your HS team’s outlook for next season? “It was a ‘Year of Firsts’ for Avon Grove Lacrosse this season. After becoming Ches-Mont Co-Champions for the first time we were able to give Avon Grove its first District 1 title. We made a run late in the state playoffs and that was an awesome experience as a freshman. Things are looking up for next year’s season. We are returning most of our starting players except for a few seniors who had strong roles on our team this year. We will be working hard to exceed our goals and hopefully make another run at a state championship in 2014.”

Thank Yous:
“I want to thank (UNC) Coach (Joe) Breschi and Coach (Pat) Myers for recruiting me and giving me this opportunity. I want to thank my high school coach, Eric Jackson, for helping me through the process. Thanks to my youth coach, Adam Mueller, for teaching me the game and developing my fundamentals. Special thanks to Mesa coaches, Mark (Aitken), and Brad (Ament) for their support. And I especially want to thank Mesa head Coach Peter (Rohr), for his guidance and believing in me. If not for all my coaches I would not be in the position I’m in today. And lastly I’d like to thank my parents and my older brothers for their love and support.”

Other schools considered? Penn State, Penn, Michigan, Johns Hopkins, Virginia

Chaparral (AZ) rising senior goalie Alex Larson has made a verbal commitment to play Division I lacrosse at Rutgers University.

Alex Larson ledger:

Alex Larson

High school: Chaparral High School, Scottsdale, Arizona

Graduation year: 2014

Position: Goalie

College choice: Rutgers University (committed in Fall, 2012

Club affiliation: Force Lacrosse Arizona, FCA U17 Team, West Coast Starz

Major lacrosse honors, camps and showcases: 2013 Under Armour Underclass – West Team; 2013 Champion All-America Showcase; 2013 & 2012 US Lacrosse All-American; 2012 Maverik Showtime All-Star; 3X All-State; 3X State All Star; 2013 Adrenaline Shootout All-Tournament Team; 2012 NSCLA w/ West Coast Starz; 2X HS Team Defensive POY

What will you major in/study: Marine Biology or Business

Why did you choose school: “After visiting and seriously looking at about 8 schools, Rutgers stood out for several reasons. Head Coach (Brian) Brecht and Coach (Craig) McDonald proved themselves by building a winning program at Sienna. All the coaches go out of their way with recruits/commits. Rutgers has a great reputation academically, is strong in the majors I am considering, and the athletic facilities overall are incredible.”

Outlook for your high school team: “We only lost seven seniors last season and our defense is young. I think we will be very strong on the defensive side of the field. We lost our three top offensive players though so some of our younger guys will need to step up if we want to get back to the state championship game.”

Thank Yous “I want to thank my mom and dad for all the sacrifices they have made so that I can be on the field, and to my grandfather (Bill, Stevens, Drexel ’63) for putting the goalie stick in my LEFT hand. I play lacrosse left handed but am naturally right-handed.”

The girls’ game is in its 18th year. All participants were graduated/graduating seniors chosen by their respective coaches’ associations as outstanding players from their respective states of Vermont and New Hampshire. Players from schools that do not play within the guidelines set by each state’s interscholastic athletic body are not eligible.

The Games are sponsored by the Hanover (NH) Lions Club, and all net proceeds will go toward funding charities and programs the Lions support. Several private, individual donors have graciously contributed significant donations of money or time, and several businesses have generously purchased advertising in the program to help reduce the cost of the Tournament to the players, and the Hanover Lions wish to publicly thank those sponsors and advertisers. Also, the Lions would like to thank the two states’ coaches’ associations and all the volunteer helpers for their efforts in making the event possible.

In addition to Vin Fucile, founder of the All-Star Games and owner of Forth ‘N Goal sports of Middlebury, VT, who passed away unexpectedly in 1997, the Games this year were dedicated to the memory of Jack Byrne, who passed away on March 7, 2013, and who, along with his wife Dorothy, established the Byrne Foundation for philanthropic purposes. The Foundation donated to many charitable, non-profit and other worthwhile causes throughout the Upper Valley and beyond.

The Byrne Foundation has been the most significant donor/sponsor/supporter of the Twin State All-Star Lacrosse Games for many years. Furthermore, in honor of the Byrne family and Byrne Foundation, established this year, to be continued onward every year hereafter, a trophy called the Byrne Cup for the winning team, both boys and girls (one trophy each), of this All-Star event. These trophies will be awarded following each game, the cups will be inscribed with each year’s winning state and game score, and will be kept in custodial care by the Hanover Lions.
