FREDERICA, Del. – Ben Tompkins says he had the best role model while serving as the backup to All-Inter-Ac League and All-EPLCA goalie Carson Marano this year at Penn Charter.

All-Tournament boys from the Cascade Elite 80 (from left) – Tyler Carney, Jack Ansart, Ben Tompkins

“He’s helped me enormously,” said Tompkins. “He was a great leader. He helped me with my footwork when it was sloppy and he helped me with my mental aspect. He also helped me learn to juggle, which helps your hand eye coordination.”

Now Tompkins is hoping to land the starting spot at Penn Charter for the 2020 season since Marano will play at NCAA Division III finalist Amherst. Tompkins is confident that the past two days spent at the Cascade Elite 80 at the Delaware Turf Sports Complex will greatly help his development.

The event – run by Legacy Global lacrosse – featured a large percentage of instruction from college coaches, a recruiting seminar and showcase games. Tompkins, rangy at 6-foot-2, 2021 from Coatesville, was the lone Philly boy to make the All-Tournament team (see full list below).

“I came here 2 years ago and I remember that the talent was great,” said Tompkins. “The whole event also was fun. There were a lot of practices instead of just games. You got to know each other. It was a great learning experience and a great time to get seen.”

Tompkins (who plays club for Feeedom) served as a reserve at Bishop Shanahan – which won the PIAA Class AA state title – as a freshman and then transferred to Penn Charter last year.

At the Elite 80, Tompkins said he learned many skills he believes will help him succeed in the highly-touted Inter-Ac.

“I had two goalie coaches here and one thing they taught me was when the attackman wraps around the crease to take a step back in to take up more of the net,” Tompkins said. “I tried it in the last game and it worked. They helped me with clearing and also taught me to do a drop pass.

“The games were great and all of them were close.”

Tompkins knows what he has to work on.

“I have to work on stepping and attacking the ball,” Tompkins said. “Carson was fierce no matter where the ball was going. He was straight to it. He always had his whole body over the ball. He was not scared of it at all. He gives it his all; I just have to follow his footsteps and do what he did.”

Others that excelled (with their reflections on the event):

Brynn Klueber, 2022 ATT, Academy of Notre Dame-PA/Philly Blast

Girls’ Standouts at the CASCADE Elite 80 (from left) – Ava Delyra, Brynn Klueber, Aimie Perino
“I wanted to come because of the competition to play at the higher level and to compete with older girls. I also wanted to see how coaches from different colleges interact with the players so I could look for future schools I might be interested in. I thought the instruction was great. One coach would stop us in the middle of practice and correct us and tell us what we could be doing better. I can bring some things I learned to my club team. It definitely helps to work with other girls; I probably made 20 or 30 new friends. The ratio of coaches to players was great; there was more instruction. I feel like I made a really good connection with the coaches.”

Ava Delyra, 2022 Goalie, Wando, S.C./Ct Dodgers

“I came last year and really enjoyed it. I like playing against high level players to help raise my game and play with girls looking to go to the next level. I felt the competition was really good. My dad was a goalie and he has kind of been helping me throughout the years. I think i have pretty quick hands; that probably my strong suit. I learned a lot about recruiting, and to not be afraid to try new things.”

Aimie Perino, 2022 MF, Vestavia Hills-AL/Hotbama

“Alabama is not that big in lacrosse and this was a great opportunity for me. To be seen closer and have 1-on-1 time with college coaches was great. In Alabama I have to travel 2 hours to a Division I school. I learned so much from the coaches, especially since we had a better ratio. I play midfield so the first day we worked on getting the quick first start, especially on the circle. That could also can translate on attack with a penalty shot or on D by trying to getting my stick in the way. We also learned that coaches while recruiting are not just looking on ball. They like to see you moving off ball to help teammates out. Everybody wants to score but when you don’t score the coaches might see something else that maybe the parents don’t.”

Jack Ansart, 2021 ATT, West Springfield-MA/Connecticut Valley, Attack MVP

“Where I am from, there is decent lax. But coming up here, it’s more fast paced. This taught me a lot about playing fast paced and against fast paced players. I was used to being one of the best players; they taught me to fight and work for what I am going to get. They also taught me to have fun playing lacrosse. That’s what the sport is about. The first day told us size doesn’t matter and to use your body. As long as you get leverage and play aggressively, it doesn’t matter what your size is – you can beat them. This helped me game, especially my aggressiveness. I noticed when I used aggressiveness in the second day I got more looks.”

Tyler Carney, 2020 G, Rutherford B. Hayes HS-OH, Goalie MVP

“It was supposed to be high level talent and it was. We got more coaching; they were more here to coach us than recruit us. I learned a lot and also got seen by college coaches. Being a goalie, I learned I was standing up too straight. One coach told me to get on my knees and that helped me a lot. I learned you have to be more vocal and that being a loud goalie helps. I also worked on being able to outlet the ball quickly and efficiently. It will help especially at the college level.”

Nick Robinson, 2020 FOGO, North Paulding-GA/Wasatch LC, FO MVP

Nick Robinson

“There was amazing instruction from the college coaches. They talked all about wing play – you never hear too much instruction on that. It was great to get out here for the recruiting. The competition was very good, similar to the Inside Lacrosse Invitational. Playing against these guys is great experience and it will help me get better. I thought the coaching here was awesome; sometimes you go to a showcase and some coaches are just there to coach (and not instruct). Every coach here knew exactly what they were talking about.”

CONSHOHOCKEN, Pa. – It was a long time coming for the Legacy Lax Pride.

Legacy (West Chester, NY) rallied to defeat Ride (Binghamton, N.Y.), 8-6, today to claim the championship at the Victory Event Series Girls Summer Slam at the Proving Grounds.

Legacy wins the Girls Summer Slam HS championship

It was Legacy’s first tournament win in two years, despite reaching quite a number of finals.

“I think we worked as a team,” said Maryrose Murphy, a rising senior at Carmel (N.Y.). “We make it to the finals of tournaments and we never get it – we never win – but this time we really wanted it and it showed. We were down early in the game but we showed how well we can come back and now we know we can do it.

“We have one tournament after this and we’re pumped for that one now that we won this one.”

Murphy, a midfielder, would like to play DIII, but has not chosen a school yet.

Ride (Binghamton, N.Y.) took an early 2-0 lead on goals by Jane Austenfeld and Kelsea Mitchell, but the Pride went ahead on a pair of goals by Fiona McGovern and a tally by Margaret Flocco. Ride went ahead again with back-to-back goals by Michaela Elston and Austenfeld, but Legacy went into halftime with a 5-4 lead courtesy of goals by McGovern and Flocco.

“We just really played as a team,” Flocco (Carmel) said. “The D was on point and our goalie was great so we all worked well together and that really made a difference. We were down early but we worked our way out of it. This was a really good tournament. The competition was really good, so this was a good win for us.”

Ride tied it in the second half on a goal by Mckenna Woodworth, then got another from Kerry Hayes to go up 6-5. That was the last time Ride held the lead, as Julianna Febbraio, McGovern and Paige Balassone netted goals to secure the win for Legacy.

McGovern led all scorers with four goals.

“We all have really good chemistry together and we all can count on each other,” said McGovern, a rising junior at Hendrick Hudson. “It’s not one of those teams where it’s just people going one-on-one. We have different people who can do the same job, and that’s the biggest part of it. The scoring was really spread out and that’s a good thing.

“We fell behind early but we weren’t thinking about that too much because we knew we had the whole rest of the game left. We just knew we were going to have to work a little bit harder and dig down to get back up there.

“This was definitely good for us. We earned this for all the times we’ve been there and not won, it’s time. I think this is a turning point for us. Now that we know what it feels like it gives us that much more motivation to get back there and do it again.

“We’re not going to be overconfident but it definitely makes us realize we can do it if we work hard. Next week is our last tournament until fall but I’ve had a blast this summer. I feel like playing in the off season really just helps you widen your abilities and it’s good to get experience with different coaches and get different perspectives.”

Legacy coach Taylor Scialdone was happy for the win, but happier that the team played well.

“This team really put their heart out on that field,” she said. “They had to dig deep for that last game. We feel behind early and that wasn’t a concern.

“It was more that we just needed a little pick-me-up. I didn’t doubt them at all. I knew they could win it. They play really well together as a team. They’re a great group. We have one more tournament this summer and we’re looking forward to it.”

From US Lacrosse

US Lacrosse has announced that 32 players have been named to the 2020 U.S. Men’s U19 Training Team.

Head coach Nick Myers and his staff made the selections following a three-day tryout weekend involving 50 players that concluded at US Lacrosse headquarters on Sunday.

“It was an incredible three days, more than we could have asked for as coaches,” said Myers, the head coach at Ohio State who also led the 2016 U.S. U19 team to a gold medal at the last world championship. “The men gave an outstanding effort and they all really helped cement the foundation of this team. We, as staff, are grateful for how open the men were to being coached and challenged to chase Team USA standards.

“The process of narrowing the roster gets tougher and tougher every time we get together. We impressed upon the men that this 50 would truly play a big role in developing our team identity and they most certainly did. We feel strongly that the training roster selected is a talented group of men that understand the mission and appreciate the work that lies ahead. We are excited to get back after in in November and take on our first outside competition.”

A total of 104 players attended the initial tryout for the team in June and 50 players were invited to the most recent round of tryouts. The roster will eventually be pared to 23, the maximum number allowed for international competition under World Lacrosse rules.

The training team will hold a camp at Ohio State in November for its final event in 2019. There will be additional training camps in 2020 leading up to the World Lacrosse Men’s U19 World Championship from July 9-18 in Limerick, Ireland.

The 32 players on the training team come from high schools in 12 different states and represent 16 different college programs (enrollment and verbal commitments).

The United States is the only nation to have won the World Lacrosse Men’s U19 Championship, having rallied to beat Canada 13-12 in 2016 on Ryan Conrad’s game-winning goal with just eight seconds remaining. That was the eighth straight world championship for the U.S., which also won gold medals in 1988, 1992, 1996, 1999, 2003, 2008 and 2012.

FREDERICA, Del. – Noelle Demarinis believes the Metro New York girls has the talent – and know-how – to defend its High School championship at the Maverik National Lacrosse Classic.

“We have four players back and it’s awesome to play with some familiar faces,” said Demarinis, a 2021 midfielder from Somers (N.Y.) who was an All-Star on last year’s title team. “I just felt with this team and coach Kevin (Backus) that we just connected so well from the get-go.”

Noelle Demarinis

Metro New York started strong on the first day of the 3-day tourney at the Delaware Turf Sports Complex. First Metro edged perennial contender Pennsylvania, 7-6, before toppling Florida, 9-4.

“I love this tournament; it is so well run and we had an amazing time last year,” Demarinis said. “I couldn’t wait to get back out there.

“At first we were shaky, and just getting to know each other. After 20 minutes, we clicked and we were getting it off the draw with quick passes, back and forth, always looking always for open girls – rather than being selfish.

“The defense was unstoppable and we were grabbing groundballs and doing hustle plays. We just destroyed it; I am so proud of everyone.”

Besides Demarinis, coach Backup praised the play of 2021 midfield/attack Samantha Paglino (Yorktown), 2021 goalie Kate Laico (East Meadow) and defenders Erin Clark (2020, Hendrick Hudson), Kira Varada (2021, Hendrick Hudson) and Geneva Berrett (2020, Orono, MN).

“Coming back (to the tourney) from last year, when I was a freshman, I saw how older girls took the leadership,” said Denarinis. “That’s something I am trying to bring from my game as well.

“Just the connections we are creating; that’s what gets you to the championship – not the goals we’re scoring. It’s the hustle plays, getting that grundball, cheering your team and working together.

“I think we just have to keep staying composed. There were a couple instances when we were rushing it. We were very frantic and so excited to be here that we weren’t settling down. We have to be looking for the smart decision. That’s what will push us to the edge and get us there.”

Pennsylvania boys go 1-0-1 in Day 1

There were ups and downs for the Pennsylvania boys as they earned a 4-3 win over Long Island before settling for a 9-9 tie with Delaware.

The PA boys return their head coach (Frank Corto) and several of last year’s members that competed in December against Team Canada in the Brogden Cup, the prize for winning the NLC. The squad is confident it can again challenge for the title.

Pennsylvania HS members (from left) Logan Covey, Connor Kernan, Conner Covey, Dom Corto

“We won it last year and got to play for Team USA – that was a great experience to do that with my friends,” said 2020 (Westminster High, MD) goalie Logan Covey (Marist commit), who along with brother Conner Covey are the lone non-PA players on the roster. “We want to get back to playing like we did last year; it’s just a matter of getting used to everybody.”

In the first game today, 2020 attackman Dom Corto (York Suburban) scored the game-winner and had three goals to help key the win over Long Island. In the tie with Delaware, Corto led with four goals and three assists.

But Corto admitted his team committed way too many turnovers. Delaware managed to tie it at 8-8 on a goal by 2020 attackman Connor Garrison (Appoquinimink) after a turnover and again at 9-9 on a tally by Brady McGovern (Salesianum School) following a PA mistake.

“We have to control the pace of the game instead of just running with our heads cut off,” said Corto. “We need to settle down a little bit and I think we’ll be good.”

Corto said competing in the Brogden Cup was a once-in-a-lifetime experience – one he wants to repeat.

“It was definitely worth it and I would do it again in a heartbeat,” said Corto. “Also, it’s my last summer tournament, one last hurrah with my friends before we all go our separate ways.

PA 2020 midfielder Conner Covey (Westminster), Logan’s twin brother, said he and Logan have played with many of the York area members of the PA team for years. He added that with Logan Covey and Connor Kernan (Susquehannock, Cleveland State commit), the goalie tandem is as strong as anyone’s

“It’s fun getting a stick back in your hands, especially with people you grew up with,” he said. “That was a fun time, going to Florida at Christmas and playing against the Canadians. They were the top team and it was a great experience for everyone.

“We had a lot of turnovers today. We have to control the ball. We probably have the two best goalies so we’re not worried about the defensive end. We have to win the faceoffs, get the groundballs and play ball control. The turnovers turned the game today.”

Kernan is playing in the National Lacrosse Classic for the first time.

“I just like to take advanatage of every opportunity,” said Kernan. “Hopefully we win it and get the chance to go to Florida to represent team USA.

“I think we need to communicate more on defense. We had some sloppy turnovers and allowed some fast breaks. We have the offensive talent; we just have to put it together and play clean and smart.”

FREDERICA, Del. – Four games, four impressive wins – a 34-10 goal differential and even a shutout of perennial power Long Island.

Colorado standout (from left) Joe Carpinello, Jaydon Adfield, Josh Yago

That’s the standard Team Colorado has set through Pool Play at the Maverik National Lacrosse Classic here at the Delaware Turf Sports Complex during the past two days. On Thursday Colorado will learn if it’s is good enough to earn a trip to the Brogden Cup, played every year against Team Canada in Florida

On Wednesday Colorado wrapped up the top seed in Pool A with a key 6-4 win over defending champion Pennsylvania and a 6-0 blanking of Long Island.Colorado meets Michigan at 9 a.m. in the first round of the playoffs.

“Last year I was on this team as a 2020 and we came in this year with a chip on our shoulder,” said attackman Josh Yago (Wheat Ridge High), who was named to the All-Star Team and is committed to Air Force. “People don’t expect a lot of good lacrosse from Colorado and last year we actually went undefeated in pool play and then lost in the quarterfinals. We just want to take that out and keep it rolling and see if we can win a championship.”

“Honestly, I thought we would be challenged a little more,” added 2020 faceoff specialist Jaydon Adfield, an All-Star alternate from Thompson Valley. “I didn’t think we’d be shutting teams out.

“I feel like we’re all playing as a team and making smart decisions. We are not throwing many bad passes.”

Defenseman Joseph Carpinello, a 2020 from Heritage High who also made the All-Star team, said the team is strong at every spot.

“I think our defense is pretty suffocating,” he said. “Jaydon is pretty good on the faceoff and the offense can score goals and that helps the defense jell.”

Carpinello said a number of the players compete together with the Colorado Outlaws club team, so it was easy to mesh.

“I think we came in confident and thought we had a good chance,” he said. “If we can keep our success going from previous tournaments we’ll do well.”

What will it take to win a championship?

“Not playing selfishly, making the extra pass and getting all the groundballs,” said Yago. “We have to keep getting into transiton – we are killing teams there – and I have to give our faceoff guy and the defense props.”

New Jersey High School Team remains undefeated

The New Jersey girls’ High School team finished 4-0 in Pool Play with two wins today, 6-4 over New England and 8-6 over previously-undefeated Long Island. New Jersey, as the top seed in Pool A, will open playoff action at 8 a.m. against Pennsylvania.

New Jersey standouts (from left) Maddie Barber, Lainey Walterson, Emily Guenther

In the win over Long Island, All-Stars Maddie Barber (Middle Township, 2020) and Emily Guenther (Notre Dame-NJ, 2020) each scored two goals to pace a balanced attack as NJ built a 6-2 lead.

“Honestly, I think we just meshed really well as a team; even on the first day of practice we said if we were a club team or school team we’d be really good,” said Guenther. “And I think having that confidence put us over the top.”

“I feel like we connect really well,” added 2021 attack Lainey Walterson (Egg Harbor Township).

Said Barber: “I think the main reason for our success is that we have a lot of shooters and we all can shoot. We are not relying on two or three people.

“Also, the defense just kills it. They are always on the right slide and always helping. They are always there when you need them to be.”

Why did the girls decide to come out for the NLC?

“I did this in 8th grade and I really loved it,” Guenther said, who is committed to D2 Indianapolis. “”I never had time to do it again, but figured it was my senior summer and I was committed so I might as well come back and have fun.”

What will it take to win the championship? “I I think we have to capitalize on other teams’ mistakes and take advantage of that and stay connected and make better choices,” said Walterson.

“I think what we have – our foundation – is pretty good,” added Barber. “We just have to clean up the little things and be smarter with our passes and in placing our shots.”

FREDERICA, Del. – Danny Stone said the only way to deal with playing all day in 90-plus temperatures was to face it head on.

“I think before this game – we were all hot and all tired – we said, ‘Let’s go pull this one out and go with high energy,'” said Stone, a goalie on the Maryland boys’ squad that was facing Colorado for the Maverik National Lacrosse Classic championship today on the burning hot rug at the Delaware Turf Sports Complex. “High energy always starts with high talk and our defense played with high energy so we wanted to be loud!”

Maryland wins the National lacrosse Classic boys’ high school championship

Indeed, Maryland’s defense backed it up.

With Stone posting 8 saves in the second half and Riley Evans making four in the first half, Maryland stifled Colorado, 3-1 for the title. The win puts Maryland in the Brogden Cup, held annually in late December as part of an International festival at Jacksonville with an All-Star team from Canada and typically U-17 girls All-Stars and U-15 boys All-Stars from the NLC also competing against the Canadians.

“I have been playing (in the NLC) since 8th grade and this is the my favorite team ever,” said Stone, who attends Flint Hill (VA) but was placed on the Maryland team because his tryouts were cancelled twice due to inclement weather. “I lucked out getting on this team.”

Nate Rollins

The game’s scoring was limited as both squads – each of who came in undefeated as Pool Play champs – flexed their defensive muscle. Maryland’s Tyler Watson scored the lone first-half goal as Evans pitched a shutout. Colorado tied it early in the second half, and the defenses held until Anthony “EZ” Truxon (2021 ATT, Mt. St. Joseph) put Maryland ahead off a Braeden Bushyager (2020 LSM, Havre de Grace) feed with 6 minutes to play.

Nate Rollins (2020 MF, Archbishop Curley) clinched it with 2 minutes to play.

“It feels really good,” said Rollins. “On defense we talked a lot. We built our chemistry; both on the field and off the field.”

“It was awesome,” added Stone. “We were able to put in two goals late in the game and really come together as a team and pull this out.”

Added Truxon: “We moved the ball and played as a team. It seemed like our defense only let up one or two a game and both goalies were strong. It will be really good to go down to Florida.”

Maryland’s squad finished 7-0 overall, allowing just 14 goals.

EZ Truxon

Earning selection to Wednesday’s All-Star team were Rollins, Stone, Bushyager, and Truxon (alternate) as well as Zachary Dudley (2020 FO, Boys’ Latin), Mackenzie Moreland (2021 ATT, Boys’ Latin, unable to play in the playoffs), Brian King (2021 DEF, Calvert Hall), Sam Szweda (2021 MF/ATT, Calvert Hall), and Gunner Settar (2021 DEF, Archbishop Curley, alternate), and Jay Rualo Jr. (2020 MF, Calvert Hall).

FREDERICA, Del. – There could have been no more dramatic an ending to a game that went back-and-forth as two undefeated teams fought for the girls’ high school championship today in 90-plus heat at the Maverik National Lacrosse Classic at the Delaware Turf Sports Complex.

Metro NY repeats as NLC High School girls’ champion

Kira Varada scored her fifth goal of the game off a brilliant draw feed from Noelle Demarinis just seconds into a special 4-on-4 Braveheart-type overtime to help Metro New York repeat as champion in a 9-8 thriller over New Jersey.

New Jersey had forced the OT period by scoring three straight goals in the final 8 minutes of regulation. But in the OT, Demarinis (2021 MF, Somers) fired a long pass off the draw over the heads of Varada (2021 MF, Hendrick Hudson) and her defender, but Varada snared the groundball, went to goal and won it.

“I just thought, ‘Get this ball, put it in the goal,'” said Varada. “We worked way too hard to lose this. I’ve been in 1v1 (Braveheart) before, but never like this and never in a championship game.”

Demarinis, one of just several players on last year’s Metro title team, had been placing draw control passes as far as 40 feet away.

“I knew that if I was able to get it over their heads, Kira would get that ball because she is such a hustle player,” said Demarinis, who had two goals and three assists. “I knew from the second we were on the field together that I needed to get it to her and we were going to score if we got it.”

Noelle Demarinis (left), Samantah Paglino

Samantha Paglino (2021 MF/ATT, Yorktown), who had one goal, said her team meshed from the start. “Even though we just formed this team, I feel like everyone on the team values teamwork so much,” she said. “We all clicked and our connection on the field is so strong.”

“We won because of teamwork and communication,” added goalie Kate Laico (2021, East Meadow). “Every position huddles and everybody made sure we were positive. We’d just say, ‘We have the next one.” We held our heads high.”

Said Varada: “We’re a new team and a lot of us haven’t played together. When you see us you think we have always played together. We won all these game beacuse of the team and because of the coaches. We really came together.”

New Jersey was led by Julia Dell’Angelo (2020 MF, Notre Dame-NJ), who had four goals, including the one that sent it into OT; and Kira Sides (2020 MF, Middle Township).

Metro team co-coach Kevin Backus (The 300) wanted to credit and thank his co-coaches, Taylor Scialdone (head coach, Legacy Lax club of Westchester), Mackenzie Porter, and Jacklyn Phillips.

FREDERICA, Del – Team Pennsylvania had redemption on its mind for both the North Jersey and the Southeast teams when the 2023 Girls’ Division playoffs arrived Thursday at the National Lacrosse Classic at the Delaware Turf Sports Complex.

Team Pennsylvania wins the 2023 title at the National Lacrosse Classic

After losing to both those foes in pool play, Team Pennsylvania routed North Jersey, 10-5, in the semifinals and then blitzed Southeast, 10-4, to take the team championship.

“The first game against North Jersey (5-3 loss) was called right at the start of the second half,” said Pennsylvania’s Claire Natoli (Central Bucks), noting that a storm caused a shortened game. “But the second day it was a redemption game because it seems they underestimated us.”

The Southeast had defeated Team Pennsylvania, 6-5, in the tourney opener. But in the final, Pennsylvania rolled.

“Our team worked very well together and we all trusted each other,” said Natoli. “We got excited before every game together and during the playoff games we were all prepared to redeem ourselves from the two games we had lost the day before.

I think that the team was so successful because of the positive enthusiastic coaching that we had with coach Kate Concheck (St. Francis-PA) and coach Annie (Morris).”

“Our team really turned it on in the playoffs,” added Kate Donovan (Mount St. Joseph). “I really think that this is because we started playing more as a team during the playoffs.

“The other teams had outstanding players, but we worked together to be an outstanding team. Most of our goals in the playoffs were assisted and included many players working together for each possession.

“I think that our team was very outgoing and friendly so it didn’t take a while before a group of random players became a winning team. Everyone on our team was very welcoming, and I think that it helped us play more fluently as a team.”

Natoli has played at the NLC three years and said the camaraderie makes it a special event.

“I think that this tourney has always been fun all three years I have done it,” she said. “Each year you get to meet new people, but also play with some of your teammates.

“This year I was lucky to play with eight other teammates of mine on Dynasty Elite and we mixed well with the rest of the girls who were super sweet and just fun to be around and play with.

“Playing at a high level of lacrosse is always fun and this tourney presents an opportunity to see all the competition that is out there. Everyone is so excited to be there and there is never a dull moment.”

The Team:
Grace Gannon, Dynasty Elite, Central Bucks South
Avery Russell, Xtreme, Palmyra

FREDERICA, Del. – Team Pennsylvania 2022 said all it took was simple: trust.

That trust helped Pennsylvania avenge an 11-5 Pool Play loss to Colorado by defeating the top seed, 5-4, Thursday for the Girls’ 2022 championship at the National Lacrosse Classic at the Delaware Turf Sports Complex.

“We knew they were going to come out thinking it was an easy win so we used that to surprise them off the bat and come out swinging,” said Pennsylvania All-Star goalie Lucy Pearson (Springside Chestnut Hill Academy). ” We also knew that their goalie was really good so we placed our shots much better.

Team Pennsylvania wins the 2022 NLC Championship

“That thing that really made a difference though was the teamwork, because in the first game we had never played before. But over the tournament we began to trust each other, move the ball faster down the field, and work together more to pull out the win.”

Team Pennsylvania also had a big 11-4 semifinal win over Pool A champ Carolina to reach the final. Emma Raines (Twin Valley) scored the game-winner against Colorado on an 8-meter in the final minutes.

“It was amazing for this team because most of us were playing together for the first time and to see our improvement over the whole tournament was really special,” Pearson said. “It was even more exciting because it was against a team that had beaten us badly the first time so to come out and show them how much we improved was great!”

Cece Reilly (Springside CHA, ATT) said her team became mpore aggressive as the tourney reached the playoffs.

“We won more draws, we played fantastic team defense and we outhustled them,” she said. “Everyone played as a team because we wanted it more and we knew we could beat them the second time around.

“We came together as a team and started to trust each other on the field. We all rooted for each other and enjoyed every moment on and off the field.”

“It was a great opportunity to meet such amazing athletes from around the country,” added Katie Bean (Pottsgrove, ATT). “I’m so lucky to have gotten to play with the team that I did. Each game our team grew together and it was teamwork that allowed us to win the ‘chip.”
